Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation

The Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation was established in Malta following the tragic assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017. The foundation is dedicated to seeking justice for Daphne, ensuring her investigative work continues, and advocating for press freedom and accountability. At the core of the foundation’s mission is the fight against corruption, human rights violations, and the creation of an enabling environment in which the press is able to fulfil its essential democratic function, including effective protection against Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPS).

One of the foundation’s most notable achievements was the institution of a public inquiry into the circumstances of Daphne’s assassination, the result of a collaborative campaign for accountability and the first-ever State investigation into how to prevent journalists’ deaths in the future. In addition, the foundation has made significant efforts to combat systemic corruption within Maltese institutions, and is working towards establishing an investigative journalism centre to enhance collaboration and resource sharing for journalists. Through its tireless advocacy and projects, the foundation strives to honour Daphne’s legacy and ensure that press freedom and journalistic integrity remain at the forefront of public discourse.
