Xnet is a Barcelona-based collective of activists and specialists dedicated to advancing digital rights and modernising democracy for the digital age. Since its inception in 2008, Xnet has championed internet freedom, transparency, and anti-corruption through a combination of technopolitical tools and advocacy. The organisation focuses on several key issues, including protecting digital privacy, defending whistleblowers, and promoting net neutrality. Xnet has been at the forefront of campaigns against disinformation and has contributed to shaping laws that safeguard digital democracy across Europe.
Xnet’s work is organised around several core areas. Their Digital Democracy initiative fosters the creation of public free-software for all essential services in Europe to guarantee auditable infrastructures and respect for digital rights on one hand, and on the other, a legislation that protect free speech in front of the disinformation business. They have made significant strides in Whistleblower Protection and protection against SLAPPs, ensuring that those who expose corruption are safeguarded. The Transparency program promotes institutional accountability by developing tools for public oversight. In line with their commitment to free access to knowledge, Xnet advocates for Free Culture, supporting the right to access creative works, information and knowledge. Xnet’s work has garnered widespread media attention, with national and international outlets regularly highlighting their influence in shaping public discourse on digital rights, transparency, and anti-corruption.
