What We Talk about When We Talk about Drugs

Almost everything you have been told about drugs is false. The Italian Coalition for Civil Rights and Freedoms launches its very first campaign, aiming to debunk all the false myths on which prohibitionist policies are founded.

by Corallina Lopez Curzi

More than forty years after its beginning, it can definitely be said that the War on Drugs has been lost. The prohibitionist battle has been fought in the streets and in courtrooms, but mass incarcerations have not solved the problem of drug trafficking, and instead played a key role in provoking the overcrowding of prisons. Drug policy is a complex issue, one which cannot and should not be addressed exclusively through a criminal approach.

For this reason and in light of the approaching UNGASS 2016 (the special session of the UN General Assembly dedicated to the question of drugs), the Italian Coalition for Civil Rights and Freedoms has launched its very first campaign, "Non Me La Spacci Giusta" (which can be roughly translated, "You Are Not Dealing It the Right Way").

The firm rejection of prohibitionist approaches and the need for new drugs policies, based on the principle of harm reduction, have already been a central theme in the action of some of the NGOs that are part of the Coalition - such as A Buon Diritto, Antigone, Forum Droghe e Società della Ragione - and are now the founding principles of this new campaign (which you can learn more about and join by clicking here).

The campaign asks for:

  • decriminalization
  • depenalization of consumption of all drugs
  • legalization of recreational marijuana for adults
  • distribution of medical marijuana for those who need it
  • creation of a legally regulated market for production, use and consumption of marijuana

Furthermore, the campaign aims to offer information and education on the issue of drugs, and therefore provides you with data on substances, info on drug policies and laws implemented all over the world and everything you need to know about the Italian legal framework on drugs.

Join the Italian Coalition for Civil Rights and Freedoms in asking the Italian government a radical re-thinking of its current approach to drugs and the embracement of an anti-prohibitionist stance in the context of UNGASS 2016!
