On 28th March 2021, the government of Romania tightened restrictions aimed at limiting the spread of COVID-19, extending the state of alert for the next 30 days.
Despite the extended state of alarm, the coronavirus infection rate in Spain continues to rise at an accelerating rate. On 12th March 2021, the country scored second on the list of European countries with the highest number of COVID-19 cases.
As reported previously, protests have been ongoing since October 2020 when the Constitutional Tribunal (CT) ruled to impose a near-total ban on abortion.
On 3rd November 2020, the Hungarian Government declared a state of emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic. On 10th November 2020, the Hungarian parliament passed a law authorising the government to use its emergency powers for 90 days.
As previously reported on the CIVICUS Monitor, on 22nd October 2020, the Polish Constitutional Tribunal ruled that abortion due to foetal abnormality is unconstitutional.

On 11th and 25th October 2020, Lithuania held parliamentary elections that ultimately led to the creation of a new conservative government.
The second wave of the coronavirus pandemic hit Hungary in early September 2020.
In late September 2020, after a 16-month deadlock, seven political parties agreed to form a coalition federal government that replaced the caretaker administration.
On 29th October 2020, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, with the support of Parliament, extended the state of alarm until May 2021, which is expected to help the authorities control the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On 2nd and 3rd October 2020, regional elections were held in the Czech Republic.
