It has come to light that the Special Investigation Service had been recording the telephone conversations of 17 Baltic News Service journalists. A Vilnius district court judge permitted Secret Services agents to wiretap journalists from nearly every BNS department except sports. According to BNS, such procedural abuse could have put confidential sources in jeopardy and also groundlessly infringed upon its employees' privacy. BNS stated, "Wiretapping journalists seriously violates the freedom of the press and is wholly unacceptable in a democracy that follows the rule of law."
