A 2018 study has revealed that one in four Lithuanians think that LGBT people should not be free to live how they want. Also, half of respondents would feel uncomfortable if a LGBT person lived in their neighbourhood. The study also highlighted a paradox: even though half of respondents agreed that criminals motivated by hatred for their victim’s sexual orientation should get harsher punishments, a third claimed to not feel empathy for LGBT couples assaulted for holding hands in public. Only one in five claimed they would be willing to intervene if they saw an LGBT person being assaulted.
