The Italian Coast Guard has rescued 86 migrants and the bodies of eight women, who died in the tragedy that took place on 6 January. According to Flavio Di Giacomo, the Italian spokesman of The International Organization for Migration, there were 64 migrant deaths in what is the first shipwreck of 2018 in the southern Mediterranean. At least 3,116 migrants lost their lives in the Mediterranean in 2017, and since 1 January of this year, 417 migrants have been rescued at sea and taken to Italy.
