Following the debate on the work of the NGOs committed to search and rescue activities in the Mediterranean and the allegations by media and the public of their collusion with traffickers, the Italian government drafted 11 rules in a "Code of Conduct" to be observed by such organizations. The draft, which has now been sent for approval to European bodies, sets out new rules like a prohibition against making phone calls to help coordinate with boats carrying migrants and the obligation to have a police officer onboard NGO vessels.
