At Amsterdam Central Station, the built-in cameras of 35 advertising screens will soon be turned off. There was some commotion about the fact that the cameras could register how long someone looked at the advertisement, as well as the sex and age of the viewer. The Dutch Data Protection Authority is researching whether the cameras are legal. People can only be filmed if they have given their consent and they should be able to object. However, if the images do not register who looks at the advertisement, there is no violation of personal data and the DPA would have no authority over the issue.
