Nadia Murad Basee and Lamiya Aji Bashar have won the 2016 Sakharov Prize, the top European human rights award. The two survivors of sexual enslavement by the Islamic State represent the suffering of thousands of Yazidi girls and women abducted by Islamic State militants and forced into sex slavery. The two women advocate for the Yazidi community and for women surviving sexual enslavement by IS. The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought is awarded each year by the European Parliament since 1988 to honor individuals and organizations defending human rights and fundamental freedoms.
