On Wednesday governments and the European Parliament agreed to revise the EU’s direct democracy tool, the European Citizens Initiative (ECI). If European citizens gather at least 1 million signatures from at least one third of member states they can ask the European Commission to submit legislative proposals on screened topics EU bodies are competent for. The reformed initiative will be more user-friendly, making it easier to participate in the democratic process, the commission has said. Since its introduction in 2012 about 9 million people have signed an ECI.
