The American company Airbnb has ended the practice of processing Dutch national identification numbers (BSN) at the insistence of the Dutch data protection authority. Airbnb now automatically extracts the BSN from all digital copies of passports. This also happens with passports that have been collected earlier, according to the privacy watchdog. To rent a home through Airbnb, people have to upload a copy of their passport. In the future it will be made easier for users to shield their BSN. If visitors of Airbnb still send their BSN, Airbnb will remove them from their archive.
