Acts of antisemitism in France have increased by 74 percent in the last year, according to the Interior Ministry, with Minister Christophe Castaner saying, "Antisemitism is spreading like poison". In recent cases swastikas have been painted over images of Simone Veil on postboxes, a tree planted to commemorate a young Jewish man tortured to death in 2006 was chopped down, and the word 'Juden' was scrawled across the storefront of a bagel shop. The number of reported antisemitic acts in France increased from 311 in 2017 to 541 in 2018.
