On the eve of Bulgaria’s 43rd parliamentary elections, the Dossier Commission examined 2,996 of 5,232 candidates to ascertain whether they had worked for the secret service – known as the Committee for State Security until 1990. (The other candidates were born after 1971 and by law could not be investigated.) The examination revealed 98 ex-agents, representing parties including the Bulgarian Socialist Party (13), the far-right Patriotic Front (NFSB-VMRO) (12), Bulgaria Without Censorship (9), the “imitation” Greens (6), and ATAKA (4). The “authentic” Green Party has no ex-agents in its ranks.
