Austria’s Interior Minister, Herbert Kickl, of the anti-immigration Freedom Party (FPÖ), suggested on Wednesday that asylum seekers be paid a uniform hourly wage of €1.50 during the first three months after their asylum applications. He is being supported by Austria’s Chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, who had already proposed so-called €1 jobs in 2016 but failed to get the backing of the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), his previous coalition partner. Opposition parties and human rights organisations argue that the proposal restricts asylum seekers’ working conditions.
