The right-wing conservative government in Austria is planning a constitutional amendment enabling it to impose preventative detention for asylum seekers deemed ‘dangerous’, said Interior Minister Herbert Kickl yesterday in Vienna. If the proposal goes through (which is unlikely because it would need a two-thirds majority in parliament) asylum seekers could be locked up without a court order – only on the basis of strong suspicion. According to Kickl, other EU states have adopted similar measures. He also announced that reception centers will be renamed “departure centers” starting on March 1.
