A proposed law that would allow police to
raid the homes of people suspected of lodging irregular migrants is causing uproar in
Belgium. The government argues it's simply transposing EU legislation into national
law. But Belgian judge Philippe Van Linthout said that the governments
draft law is an affront to the judiciary. "One day we will wake up in
a country where fundamental rights no longer exist," he said. Defenders of the
bill say it's needed to more effectively carry out returns and that raids would only be used as a last resort after a migrant has been told
numerous times to leave.
