Thousands of supporters of Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) held a demonstration in Berlin on 27 May, but they were upstaged by a counter protest four times larger. Police said roughly 5,000 AfD supporters attended the march, and some 20,000 counter protesters opposed them. AfD supporters, who take a hard line on immigration issues in particular, chanted "We are the people," while counter demonstrators responded with chants of "Go away Nazis." AfD became Germany's largest opposition party late last year, taking 13% of the general election vote.
