British spy agencies GCHQ, MI5, and MI6 unlawfully collected data on UK based NGO Privacy International (PI), which has since written to the UK’s home secretary calling for action against spy agencies. The revelation comes soon after the European Court of Human Rights ruled British laws on mass surveillance to be unlawful. These developments add further heat to the public debate about whether intelligence agencies should be allowed to use to mass surveillance techniques to collect information about people not suspected of any wrongdoing, and about what they can do with the bulk of data gained.
