The Total Surveillance of One Budapest District

Thanks to a multi-million forint investment, a district in Budapest is fully covered by surveillance cameras. Does it represent a revolutionary advancement in security, or an invasive security program forced on the public?

by Hungarian Civil Liberties Union

In addition to updating the existing 115 surveillance cameras in Józsefváros, Budapest's 8th district, 65 new ones were made available on October 7. With this investment of 300 million forints (approximately 1 million EUR), the entire district is now fully covered, and the cameras will be able to be connected to a facial recognition system as well. The HCLU film crew investigated the challenges presented by this new equipment, questioning its effectiveness and potential harm to society.
