Watch: Campaign for Drug Decriminalisation in Lithuania

A year after Lithuania amended its drug laws for the worse, a campaign has been launched in support of the decriminalisation of drug use. Watch their video by Drugreporter.

by Peter Sarosi

Since January 2017, possession of any amount of illegal substances for personal use has been a criminal offence in Lithuania, punishable by prison time.

A failed reform proposal was tabled in parliament. The amendments to the criminal code that had been proposed would have removed criminal punishment for possession of small amounts for personal use, and the sanctions would have been moved from the criminal code into the administrative code.

Despite this, the campaign of the coalition 'I Can Live', argues that the failed reforms would not have addressed the diversion from punishment to comprehensive help for people who use drugs.

Therefore, they teamed up with the Drugreporter to start a media campaign for a more balanced and evidence-based drug policy in Lithuania.
