Supporting foster families instead of institutional care in the Czech Republic is a topic about which most political parties agree, at least in their election programs. As experts have pointed out, however, little was done during the last parliamentary term to improve the care of vulnerable children. The Czech Republic had about 6,000 children in institutional care in 2017, and the state is still sending toddlers to institutions. The country is one of the few remaining EU countries that still places children under three years of age in such facilities.
