The new Speaker of the House of Representatives, Khadija Arib (PvdA - Labour Party), is the first person from an immigrant background to hold the position. She was elected on January 13 with support from 83 MPs. The House needed four rounds to choose a new speaker. "I am a bit moved," Arib said, immediately after receiving the gavel. She will be a speaker for everyone, she said, who will wholeheartedly commit herself and "intervene where necessary."
