For the first time, a woman will be trained as a marine, the elite soldier of the Dutch Navy. The course was opened to women in January 2017 by then Minister of Defense Jeannine Hennis-Plasschaert. For 351 years prior to this, the training was exclusively open to men. The incredibly heavy admission requirements for women are the same as for men. A total of about 2,300 people work in the elite corps. Women are still not able to work on submarines, but that will change when the Ministry of Defense starts buying new submarines.
