Patients are worried about the safety of their personal data. According to research by the Dutch Federation of Patients, over half of patients believe that personal data is not safe with health insurers. The federation asked over 6,600 patients about their privacy. Health insurers have to execute certain statutory tasks for which they need information of the insured. To that end, they may process personal data, including medical data (to handle claims, for instance). Seventy-eight percent of patients say that health insurers should inform them if medical data is requested from practitioners.
