The Dutch Data Protection Authority received 500 phone calls over the last year and a half about privacy in education. By coincidence, parents find out that information about their children has been shared with other schools or social workers, even though their consent was needed in many cases. Only in emergency situations is consent not needed, for instance when child abuse is suspected. Many schools are not aware of the rules around privacy. According to Gerrit-Jan Zwenne, a professor in privacy law, there is a solution: "Appoint someone who is responsible for privacy at every school."
