The Dutch Senate has rejected a legislative proposal on the introduction of electronic detention. The governing Labour Party (PvdA) and Liberal Party (VVD) voted in favor of the proposal while the opposition parties voted against it. The proposal would have allowed detainees who behave well to serve the final part of their sentence (of at least six months) outside prison with the use of electronic monitoring. In the opinion of the senators, however, insufficient attention had been given to the reintegration into society of detainees and the desired effects on repeat infringement.
