The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has criticized Romania over its lack of commitment in addressing domestic violence despite the existence of a legal framework in the country. The ECHR ruled on Tuesday that Romania should pay 9,800 euros to a woman who was assaulted by her husband eight times throughout their marriage, during the divorce, and even afterwards. Her various injures required between two and 10 days' medical care. The Court held that authorities did not do enough to protect her, nor did they do enough to hold him accountable, despite her numerous complaints.
