Twenty-eight signatories – among them Liberties – sent an open letter to EU governments expressing their concerns over slow progress in the ePrivacy reform currently being finalised by the Council. The European Commission published its proposal in January 2017 and NGOs argue it’s high time to finalize the legislation to complement the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) coming into force in May. Still, the Council’s negotiations have been inconclusive. Some governments seem to prioritise the narrow interests of a small number of major online companies over fundamental rights.
