France has said EU states will intervene militarily to end slave markets in Libya. French President Emmanuel Macron announced the initiative in Abidjan on November 29, following meetings at the EU-Africa summit that concluded on November 30. Macron said the 'emergency operation' would take place in the coming days to evacuate those who wanted to return to their home countries. His announcement comes amid widespread reports of slave markets in Libya and the release of video footage by CNN of people in Libya being sold as slaves for $400 each earlier this week.
