An EU naval mission tasked with disrupting people smuggling has failed to achieve its objective, a UK Lords committee report has found. Operation Sophia, an initiative of 25 EU member states, including the UK, was implemented to disrupt organized criminal gangs involved in human smuggling and trafficking across the Mediterranean. But the operation has done little to curb the work of these groups or the flow of migrants attempting to reach Europe. The report concluded that the operation should not be renewed.
