The European Ombudsman, Emily O'Reilly, has found four instances of maladministration in the appointment of the European Commission’s Secretary-General, the watchdog concluded in its investigation into two complaints. The inquiry was based on the interception of thousands of pages of internal documents, based on which the EC made the appointment process appear normal, jeopardising the hard-won record of high EU administrative standards. The Ombudsman is calling on the EC to develop an appointment procedure for its Secretary-General to prevent a repetition of the fiasco.
