The European Parliament on 17 January voted to stop the export of dangerous surveillance equipment to rights-abusing governments. The vote is a step forward to protect activists, human rights defenders, journalists, and citizens all over the world from human rights violations caused by surveillance technologies. “We need transparency from member states on these practices, and licensing data about exports to be publicly available,” said Antonella Napolitano, Civil Liberties in the Digital Age programme coordinator at the Italian Coalition for Civil Liberties and Rights.
