The European Commission (EC) has told social media companies they should remove illegal content with two hours of it being posted. The EC, in a meeting with almost two dozen social media companies on 9 January, told the firms to share illegal content with police amid broader threats of imposing EU-wide legislation to enforce the takedown of such material. The demand is part of a broader EU effort to get firms act more quickly against online content. But critics of the move say that what constitutes incitement to hatred, violence and terrorism in such cases is often open to interpretation.
