"[C]itizens' rights in Lithuania are infringed. LGBTI people [...] are pushed back [into] the closet. They have to be afraid that their public actions, holding hands in the street or placing a photo on their Facebook site, might even [cause them to] end up in prison. This should not be the case in a country of the European Union," said European Parliament Vice-President Ulrike Lunacek of Austria in February. The European Commission has already sent a formal request to Lithuania concerning restrictions on information that "encourages a concept of the family other than prescribed by law."
