Former GroenLinks
leader Femke Halsema is to be the new mayor of Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. She is the first
female mayor in the city’s history and the first mayor from the
left-wing green party.
Halsema led GroenLinks in the Dutch parliament from 2002 to 2010. "It is a great privilege to be able to serve my fellow city dwellers in
the coming years," she said in a post on her own website. "I will do
everything within my power to be the mayor of all Amsterdammers."
