The French Constitutional Council has ruled that using bone tests to estimate the age of young migrants is constitutional. These controversial examinations are known to have a significant margin of error. This case started with a young Guinean who arrived in France in 2016 and claimed to be 15. When he refused to submit X-ray tests a judge decided that this proved he was an adult. He was denied protection, which minors benefit from under international law. Several major NGOs have criticised the decision, saying it “seriously undermines the protection” of vulnerable children.
