First Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans wants to succeed Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the European Commission. Timmermans, who is Dutch, is the current commissioner responsible for better regulation, interinstitutional relations, the rule of law and the Charter of Fundamental Rights. Timmermans already has the support of the German Social Democrats, but his nomination as the European Social Democrats' Spitzenkandidat is only due at the party's congress, in December. He is a vocal supporter of rule of law, strengthening democracy and rights within the EU.
