A garden center in the Dutch city of Tilburg has rejected a woman who applied for a job as a cashier because she wears a headscarf. The applicant would have been invited for an interview had she been prepared to work without the scarf. According to the owner of the garden center, wearing a headscarf is not in line with the culture of the company. It is not permitted by the Dutch law to reject employees on the basis of their religion. According to the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights, everyone should be able to express his or her religion and wearing a headscarf is one way of doing so.
