Journalists may now ask courts to obtain reasons for a judgment in a written, anonymized form - even if a decision is not yet in force. The German Federal Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht) made this decision in a case concerning a public figure convicted of bribing a member of Parliament. A newspaper publisher wanted to inform the public about it and requested a copy of the verdict, but the criminal court refused. The Constitutional Court saw this as a violation of the freedom of the press, which is guaranteed in Article 5 of the German Constitution.
