Google has been fined for the first time under the new EU privacy regulation after France’s CNIL data protection authority handed down a 50 m euro penalty for breaching the privacy law by failing to obtain adequate consent from users when processing their data for the purpose of personalised advertising. CNIL added that the internet giant had not provided clear and easily accessible information to consumers about how their data was collected and stored. "The relevant information is accessible after several steps only, implying sometimes up to five or six actions" CNIL said.
