The Hungarian government's law enabling rule by decree is an attack on the free press. And a recent decree passed under this enabling law suspends the application of certain rights guaranteed to Hungarians by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The government alleges that these steps are part of measures against COVID-19. In reality, they are the latest in a broader effort going back a decade to systematically dismantle the rule of law and fundamental rights.
The Hungarian Civil Liberties Union, Access Now and Liberties have written an open letter to Vice President Jourová and Commissioner Reynders setting out the various ways in which these measures conflict with Hungary’s obligations under the EU Treaties and EU law.
