One of the largest state-run institutions for the disabled
in Hungary will be closed down after the publication of a shocking report by the Mental
Disabilities Advocacy Center (MDAC). The report reveals that the Tophaz Special
Home kept its residents in horrendous conditions. Adults and children both received care in the 220-bed facility, where evidence shows people
were kept injured, malnourished and with excrement on the walls. MDAC thinks this is just the tip of the iceberg and that at least 20,000 patients live
in similar closed homes in the country.
