"We are highly concerned
by the Hungarian government’s recent moves to stigmatise civil society
organisations and by the possible forced closure of CEU. These developments
will have severe negative implications for Hungarian society, social and human
rights and the environment," reads a letter to the European Commission by
international NGOs, including Greenpeace, Amnesty, Human Rights Watch and
Liberties. The letter ends by stating: "In keeping with the values of the
EU, we urge the EC to ensure that all countries defend the role of civil society in promoting open and accountable societies."
