After Ireland overwhelmingly backed repealing the abortion ban in May, discussion of the topic has become heated ahead of the parliamentary debate on the new legislation. After a near full ban in the Irish constitution is removed, the new law will allow abortion services to be provided "on demand" up to the 12th week of a pregnancy. Doctors will be allowed to opt out of providing medical or surgical abortions, although they will have to refer woman seeking abortions to another doctor. However, some doctors have said they will refuse to do this.
