Today is Equal Pay Day in Germany, home to one of the EU's largest gender pay gaps. Women in Germany earn 21 percent less than men, in terms of average gross hourly earnings. This year's Equal Pay Day is on 18 March because it is the 77th day of 2019 – the day of the year up to which women work without pay, compared with men statistically. Events to mark the day are being held across the country, including in Berlin, which is reducing public transport fares for women by 21 percent. Gender pay gaps exist in nearly all EU countries, despite equality being a bedrock EU value.
