Italy's new interior minister, Matteo Salvini, has refused permission for a migrant rescue ship to dock in Italian ports. The Aquarius, which is carrying 629 migrants, is currently stranded in the Mediterranean. Under Salvini's order, Italian maritime authorities instructed the vessel to stand by in its current position, 35 nautical miles from Italy and 27 nautical miles from Malta. Salvini, leader of the far-right League, asked Malta to accept the Aquarius, but Malta said the ship picked up the migrants in Libyan waters, meaning they fall under Italy's jurisdiction.
