Italy has threatened to stop foreign boats from disembarking rescued migrants on its territory, after a recent surge in arrivals. The warning came after 12,000 people arrived in Italy in the last 48 hours. According to insiders of the Italian press office ANSA, EU Ambassador Maurizio Massari has been given the mandate of the Italian government to formally address the "unsustainable" situation with the European Commission. Massari has told EU Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos that the situation in Italy has become so serious that it needs more assistance from fellow member states.
