Italy has violated the rights of migrants by not allowing them access to asylum procedures, the European Court of Human Rights has ruled. The Court also noted that many of the migrants, especially those from Afghanistan, could be harmed upon return to their homelands. The case stems from incidents in 2008 and 2009, when the migrants, coming by boat from Greece, were apprehended by Italian border police and quickly deported. So far this year, over 140,000 migrants have arrived in Italy, with over 3,000 reported dead or missing at sea.
