The Central European University (CEU) in Budapest says it has officially been forced out of Hungary by the authoritarian Orban government, after a weekend deadline to reach an agreement passed. "We can no longer operate as a free institution in the city and country we call home," said the school's president, Michael Ignatieff. This marks the first time a European university has been forced to close since the Nazis shut down the University of Oslo in 1943. CEU, founded by philanthropist George Soros to foster democracy in post-Communist Central Europe, will move to Vienna.
